I am happy to share a family portrait. My 8 yr old son had signed up for flag football and this was our first visit to the indoor field house. Taking photos and documenting my family is a large desire for me. I often bring my camera to many events, and outings. I do not like staged photos much, I would rather see people doing things rather than model their clothes.
I anticipated the challenge of not knowing the lighting conditions by bringing a versatile film like Kodak Tri-X or Ilford HP5. I often push these films once or twice by default for the increased blacks and contrast.
I use a spot meter so I can not only accurately learn my exposures but to maintain consistency. I don't like my skin tones to dark so I will expose the skin one stop brighter then the box speed. If the scene being metered is F2 1/1000 at a ISO of 400, I will increase it a stop and expose it at F2 1/500. I do this often with colour negative film as well, sometimes even 2 stops over. This photo benefits from natural light, I took this photo with a window behind me.
