This photo was taken on a typical morning before pre-school. While trying to get everyone out the door, I noticed the texture and shapes of my son’s cereal in the bowl and the milk spilled on the table. Beyond the mess, I couldn’t help but see it as a reflection of the busy daily life in our house and decided to stop and photograph everything as my son left it.
As a father of young kids, I cherish watching them grow up above all else and this photograph also acts as a visual reminder to me about how quickly it all goes by and to savour everything regardless of how trying and messy life can seem in the moment. When they are all grown up, I hope to have a thoughtful and comprehensive photographic archive of their life that consists of as much day to day life as it does milestones and birthday photos as I feel it’s the in between moments that are just as or even more important to remember.
Despite other subjects I photograph or projects that I work on, I consider documenting their upbringing as my life’s work and even if they grow up and show no interest in the result, I can feel satisfied knowing that I did everything I could to provide them the option to see it all as I saw it.
