"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
I often take walks up into the forestry where I live here in the South Wales Valleys and have taken hundreds of images with many cameras and film stocks. The thing I love about shooting film is that even though I tend to shoot the same subjects I manage to get a different look every time which keeps me going back over and over and never get bored.
What I like about this image is how the colours are rendered, almost painterly and the shallow DOF the 80mm gives at f2.8 draws you into the frame.
I shot 3 frames at different heights and this was in the middle which seemed to work best. I like to shoot low but on this occasion it did not work as well.
This was only the 2nd roll of Portra 400VC I have ever shot. The 1st roll was shot in bright sunshine and it's fair to say the images really popped. This roll was shot in overcast conditions and, as most of the roll was shot wide open due to the light (no tripod), the soft, dreamy look really worked.
Tech stuff .. exposed for ISO 200 and home developed in Tetenal C41 kit.
