In the shape of what we have come to recognize as a heart, this image of a Caladium leaf represents unconditional to me.
Being one of my favourite subject matters, I never miss an opportunity to photograph a leaf. This was my last frame on a roll of a remarkable film.
This particular July day in Toronto was hot and steamy - it was around 29 degrees (Celsius) with 80% humidity, so I was in a rush to finish up shooting; but as I was hurriedly exiting Allan Gardens, I glimpsed this lovely leaf sitting in a corner of the greenhouse and quickly took the shot then ran out the door.
After developing the film, I was amazed to see the details on the leaf that reminded me of looking at cells under a microscope, which may have been a result of me serendipitously forgetting to remove the green lens filter. This train of thought brought me to the realization that life and love is everywhere, even within a humble leaf.
