My passion for photography started at a very young age. It all started when relatives sent me over an Agfamatic 126 camera from Germany. I remember my first experience felt magical. Waiting a whole week to see my pictures felt like an eternity. I started by taking snapshots of things that I like such as the neighbour’s dogs. Soon I started taking the camera on school field trips and using it to document my experiences.
I will now jump forward to the fall of 2001 when my submitted image was captured. I was in the tenth grade and started a photography course. In class I was introduced to the technical and creative possibilities of photography.
2001 was a year filled with both utter joy and tragedy. I truly discovered my passion for photography and I lost a friend in a car accident. This picture was taken soon after learning of the loss of my friend. My hobby of chasing light with a camera intensified and in return gave me emotional release from my sense of loss I was experiencing.
