I love photography but I’m pretty new to shooting film. It’s teaching me to slow down, but a while back I needed to shoot and develop a roll of Kodak 400TX in preparation for a Lith printing workshop a few days later.
So there I was, out and about with my camera, feeling caught between wanting to shoot mindfully and needing to capture 36 images by the end of the day.
In the late afternoon I stopped at a lovely, relaxed little outdoor-cafe in Johannesburg and there, in the parking lot I met Norman a car park attendant. We chatted and I asked him if I could take his portrait. He was hesitant because he’d lost so many teeth and I assured him that he didn’t need to smile if he didn’t want to. I readied my camera and Norman flashed me the most generous, beautiful smile and I got the shot I wanted.
