Our first stop was Santa Cruz. This was a strange town, eerie even. We were there on a weekday so the boardwalk and carnival were dead, but there was no shortage in characters.
The portrait of the man above was my favorite portrait of the trip for a number of reasons. The first is that, to me, he represented the stereotypical California hippie. He really made me feel like I was in California. He also shared some of his wisdom with us. He told us that he was originally from Canada, but saved up to move to California as fast as possible.
As we conversed, we mentioned that our car was broken into. To this he taught us a lesson. He said “everybody gets stripped in Cali. You gotta get by with what you got and take what grace give you.”
It was my favorite quote of the trip, and still rings true to me today.
